Together we can end cruel and racist treatment of people seeking safety
Learn about opportunities to volunteer with a collective seeking to overcome the UK Home Office's Hostile Environment with kindness, compassion and solidarity
This week the British Government announced amendments to Home Office guidance that will prevent refugees who entered the UK by irregular routes from ever obtaining Citizenship. In the absence of safe-routes and resettlement schemes for most refugees fleeing conflict, persecution, and violence, this policy change will have devastating impacts for thousands of refugees.
Whilst the new Labour government have repealed much of hostile legislation introduced by their predecessors including repealing the so-called Rwanda Bill 2024 and certain parts of the Illegal Migration Act 2023, it’s clear they are hell-bent on continuing their regime of performative cruelty.
Difficult times lie ahead, but we are not without hope.
Since its inception, the Kind Economy has organised asylum seekers, refugees, and communities across Belfast to act in solidarity against the hostile environment. We know that together we can end cruel and racist treatment of people seeking safety.
We need you to help us resist this performative cruelty and so we are calling for volunteers to help with the following:
Volunteers to help us at events
We need people who can help at our pop-up kitchen events, either helping in the kitchen, with set-up/clean-up and handing out leaflets.
English Teachers
There is a chronic shortage of English classes in Belfast, and we need volunteers to run conversational classes either on-line or in person. We’d particularly love to hear from people who have experience teaching English as a foreign language, but this is not essential.
Training & Skill Sharing
There are many incredibly skilled asylum seekers and refugees in Belfast who are keen to share what they know and learn new skills. If you or your organisation would be interested in hosting a skill share or collaborative workshop, please contact us.
If you can help with any of these things, please email leasha@pprproject.org
