Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) - ‘A violence I shouldn’t have had to endure’

Lisa Morrison, PPR and Professor John Read, University of East London on BBC Radio Ulster Evening Extra on 5 February 2024 , talking about the harm caused by ECT and the need for a New Script for Mental Health.
Professor Read described it as ‘a very grave situation’ and outlined 3 key concerns with using ECT :
- It doesn’t address the problems it is given for
- There is no evidence that it works
- It causes long lasting, permanent brain damage.
Both Lisa Morrison and Professor Read called for the demedicalisation of emotional distress and the introduction of a New Script for Mental Health.
