12,726 'households' on the social housing waiting list and no sign of a solution
Chronic housing need continues to rise across Belfast as the homeless now account for 71% of the waiting listThe Housing Executive has updated its social housing statistics to the end of March 2024. They show that:
- Belfast has 12,726 households on the waiting list, up from 12,483 at end 2023 – a net increase of 243 additional households joining the Belfast waiting list in the first 3 months of 2024
- 10,307 of the households on Belfast’s waiting list – eight out of every ten – are considered by the Housing Executive to be in housing stress (with 30+ points)
- Of these, 9,000 households (70.7% of all households on the waiting list) are recognised as Full Duty Applicant homeless. This is a net increase of 275 homeless households over the first three months of 2024, equal to more than a 3% rise on the homeless figure at end 2023 of 8,725 Belfast households with FDA status.
