Wed Mar 06 2024  |  Mental Health Rights

Lisa Morrison, PPR and Professor John Read, University of East London on BBC Radio Ulster Evening Extra on 5 February 2024 , talking about the harm caused by ECT and the need for a New Script for Mental Health.

Professor Read described it as ‘a very grave situation’ and outlined 3 key concerns with using ECT :

  1. It doesn’t address the problems it is given for
  2. There is no evidence that it works
  3. It causes long lasting, permanent brain damage.

Both Lisa Morrison and Professor Read called for the demedicalisation of emotional distress and the introduction of a New Script for Mental Health.
